Silt Fence: Essential Sediment Control for Kiwi Construction and Landscaping Projects

When protecting New Zealand’s beautiful waterways and maintaining compliance on construction sites, one simple yet powerful tool stands out — the silt fence. Whether you’re managing a building site, subdivision, or landscaping project, installing the right silt fence can make the difference between a clean, compliant site and costly environmental damage.

At SD ALUMINIUM, we supply high-quality construction and landscaping solutions, including durable silt fence fabric, clips, and accessories — helping Kiwi contractors keep sediment exactly where it belongs.

What Is a Silt Fence?

A silt fence (also known as a sediment fence) is a temporary barrier made from woven geotextile fabric. It’s installed along the downslope of exposed soil areas to intercept and slow down stormwater runoff, allowing sediment to settle out before reaching drains or waterways.

These fences work by letting water pass through the fabric while trapping soil particles — an essential part of erosion and sediment control during construction or landscaping works. Without this barrier, soil can wash away easily, clogging drains and contaminating streams and estuaries.

Why Every Site Needs a Silt Fence

Soil erosion is one of the most common environmental issues on construction sites across New Zealand. When rainwater flows across bare soil, it picks up sediment that ends up in the stormwater system. Installing a silt fence helps:

  • Prevent sediment runoff into public drains and waterways.
  • Comply with council and environmental regulations for erosion and sediment control.
  • Protect neighbouring properties from sediment damage.
  • Save time and money by avoiding fines, clean-up costs, and rework.
  • Support sustainable building practices that protect New Zealand’s natural environment.

In short, a well-installed silt fence is a small investment that delivers big results — both for compliance and for the planet.

How to Install a Silt Fence Correctly

Even the best silt fence won’t work if it’s installed incorrectly. Follow these key steps for optimal performance:

  1. Plan your fence line
Place the silt fence along the contour of the land, below the area of disturbance. Avoid locations where water concentrates into channels or gullies.

  2. Excavate a trench
Dig a trench approximately 150–200 mm deep along the line. This allows the fabric’s bottom edge to be buried to prevent water flowing underneath.

  3. Install posts
Drive wooden stakes or steel pickets into the ground on the downslope side of the fabric, spaced around 2 m apart.

  4. Attach the fabric
Secure the silt fence fabric to the posts using clips, ties, or staples. Ensure the fabric is taut and firmly supported.

  5. Backfill and compact
Backfill the trench with soil and compact it tightly against the fabric to create a good seal.

  6. Add returns (“wings”) at ends
Turn the fence ends upslope to prevent runoff from bypassing around the edges.

  7. Maintain regularly
Inspect your silt fence after each rainfall. Remove built-up sediment when it reaches one-third of the fence height and repair any damaged sections.

Correct installation and maintenance ensure your silt fence performs effectively throughout your project’s lifespan.

When a Silt Fence Isn’t Enough

While silt fences are highly effective for sheet flow across gentle slopes, they’re not suitable for areas with concentrated water flow, steep slopes, or large catchments. In those cases, consider additional erosion control methods such as:

  • Sediment ponds or traps
  • Rock check dams
  • Super silt fences (reinforced with wire mesh)

Using the right combination of controls helps protect your site and ensures you meet all environmental obligations.
